Living abroad can be exciting. It’s an opportunity to experience new cultures and expand your horizons. While you’re putting down roots in another country, don’t forget that you still have legal responsibilities to the United States. As a citizen, you are still required to file your taxes.

Who Has to File U.S. Taxes?

If you are still considered a citizen of the United States, then you must file a tax return. That includes filing for income tax as well as gift tax and estate returns. The good news is most U.S. citizens living abroad do not owe money, just the return.

Is There a Deadline for Expatriate Tax Filing?

If you are one of the minority that does owe money, payment was due to the IRS on April 15th. Interest is accrued so pay as soon as possible. As an expat, you do have an automatic extension for filing. Even though payment was due by April 15th, your tax filing was not due until June 15th. If you were unable to file by June 15th, you were required to request for an October 15th extension.

A CPA can help you file as well as provide important and helpful financial advice to ensure that your paperwork is correct and that you pay the amount required by law. Make tax filing easy, contact Expatriate Tax Returns today.
